Our weekend DIY project! It turned out rather nice if I do say so myself, and I just did!!

Wine Wednesday – Chateau St. Croix 2008 Zinfandel (California)

Last night I had the pleasure of uncorking a wonderful 2008 Zinfandel from a local Wisconsin winery and vineyard, Chateau St. Croix. I don’t claim to be a wine expert by any means, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this pallet pleasing vino…

I have always had a fear of the Zinfandel — don’t get me wrong, I like it, but it always seemed too dry or perhaps even too heavy for my teeny-bopper taste buds. As I uncorked the bottle and caught my first whiff of the aroma permeating out of it, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The bottle’s description was right-on; the big, bold blackberry scent filled the air and made my mouth water in anticipation.

As I carefully aerated (through my new Vin-Aire instant aerator) the deep ruby colored liquid into my glass, I made sure to take note of all of the scents that complimented the heavy blackberry aroma, including notes of dried oak and a hint of black pepper. (Again – I’m a novice at this, so my ability to pick out every possible aromatic infusion is still developing — please bear with me.)  As if the aroma filling the air wasn’t enticing enough, a smile filled my face as I watched what I call the “legginess” of the wine in my glass as I swirled it around a few times. Taking it all in, the anticipation was there… Finally, it was time to take my first sip…

As I said earlier, I have always had a fear of the Zinfandel, and I can honestly say that as of this point, I am no longer afraid. The bold flavor filled my palate (and my nostrils), and I was pleasantly surprised! I would highly recommend this wine to anyone looking for a beautiful (yes, even the label is intriguing set against an earthy green bottle) red wine to add to their collection. And if you’re looking for a fun outing on these beautiful spring days, a trip to the local winery and vineyard would be a must-do on the bucket-list, as well!
